Psychiatric genetics: A frightful chromosome
نویسنده
چکیده
A duplication of part of chromosome 15q, apparently inherited in a non-Mendelian fashion, has been found to be strongly associated with phobic disorders. This unusual genetic mechanism may partly explain the heritability of phobias and other complex traits.

Psychiatric syndromes in individuals with chromosome 18 abnormalities.
Chromosome 18 abnormalities are associated with a range of physical abnormalities such as short stature and hearing impairments. Psychiatric manifestations have also been observed. This study focuses on the presentations of psychiatric syndromes as they relate to specific chromosomal abnormalities of chromosome 18. Twenty-five subjects (13 with an 18q deletion, 9 with 18p tetrasomy, and 3 with ...
متن کاملA hypothesis for how chromosome 11 translocations cause psychiatric disorders.
Despite extensive effort for many years, the etiology of major psychiatric diseases remains unknown. A recent study by Baysal et al. has argued against the ALG9 gene variants in causing psychosis. Due to its disruption by a balanced t(9p24;11q23) translocation that segregates with the disorder in a family, it was proposed to be a primary candidate gene causing psychosis. In addition, a recent r...
متن کاملNo association of the GABAA receptor genes on chromosome 5 with alcoholism in the collaborative study on the genetics of alcoholism sample.
A substantial body of literature suggests that gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) may be involved in the neurochemical pathways contributing to alcohol use and related disorders. Chromosome 5 contains a cluster of GABA(A) receptor genes, GABRA1, GABRA6, GABRB2, and GABRG2, which have been among the most extensively studied in relation to alcohol use. These studies have yielded mixed results. Using ...
متن کاملEvidence for genes on chromosome 2 contributing to alcohol dependence with conduct disorder and suicide attempts.
Twin studies provide strong evidence that there is a shared genetic liability that predisposes to a number of different psychiatric outcomes related to behavioral disinhibition. Further, alcohol dependence comorbid with other disinhibitory disorders is particularly heritable. Chromosome 2p14-2q14.3 has been linked to multiple psychiatric conditions related to behavioral undercontrol. In the Col...
متن کاملRing Chromosome 18: A Case Report
Ring chromosomes are rare chromosomal disorders that usually appear to occur de novo. A ring chromosome forms when due to deletion both ends of chromosome fuse with each other. Depending on the amount of chromosomal deletion, the clinical manifestations may be different. So, ring 18 syndrome is characterized by severe mental growth retardation as well as microcephaly, brain and ocular malformat...
